In a statement here on Wednesday, he said that the government had completely failed to provide security to newsmen. Attempts to suppress the truth were made not only at the government level but journalists were receiving threats from terrorist organizations as well.
The JI chief said that Pakistan ’s ranking as the most dangerous country for the journalists was a slap on the face of the government that claimed to be the champion of press freedom. He said the police torture on the reporter who brought to light the Kharotabad police torture on foreigners clearly proved that the police and its security agencies were out to stifle the truth at every cost.
He said that every other day, a journalist lost his life for the discharge of his professional duty. He said that the enquiry commission to probe into the murder of Saleem Shahzad was yet to be announced while the assassins of GEO reporter Wali Khan Babar had not been brought to book despite being traced. All this showed the government’s incompetence and its failure to protect the life and property of journalists.
Syed Munawar Hasan pointed out that the JI had always supported freedom of the press and demanded creation of an atmosphere that enabled the newsmen to carry on their professional duties without fear and pressure. He directed JI leader and workers to join the journalist sit-in at Islamabad .
He paid rich tributes to the journalists for their valuable services and great sacrifices in the discharge of their duties and expressed the hope that the journalist community would carry on its duties of bringing to the fore the corruption of the rulers and the illegal pursuits of the terrorist organizations for the benefit of the masses and would not be deterred by any threats. He assured them that the truth would triumph at the end.
