World leaders are gathering for a High-Level Meeting on HIV and AIDS at the UN General Assembly (New York, 8-10 June 2011) to review progress made in the global response to HIV and AIDS over the last decade. Along with other UN Agency heads, Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-General is attending the opening to represent UNESCO’s leadership in education and HIV.

UNESCO is also co-sponsoring side events focused on linking HIV and sexual and reproductive health issues, and on engaging young people in the response to HIV and AIDS. Other officials from UNESCO will also be attending the panel sessions. As a UNAIDS cosponsor, the Organization’s strategic priorities are to support comprehensive education sector responses to HIV and AIDS, and prevention through sexuality education, gender equality and human rights.
The High-Level Meeting will focus both on the gains that have been made thirty years into the epidemic, and on the renewed commitment that is required from Member States in order to achieve zero new infections, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS-related deaths. Member States are expected to adopt a new Declaration that will guide a sustained response to HIV and AIDS that focuses on change management, rather than crisis management, and supports country- and people-owned responses through focused, evidence-informed interventions. UNESCO will contribute to these commitments as a leader in engaging young people and the education sector in the response to HIV.
